Title

Retail Store Manager

Job Summary:

Are you an experienced retail leader who enjoys building teams, creating exceptional customer experience, and driving sales results?

 

This position is responsible for overseeing day-to-day retail operations, leading department managers, supporting inventory and merchandising initiatives, and developing a positive, engaged team culture. While gardening and horticulture knowledge are helpful, we're primarily looking for a strong retail leader who can bring proven management experience and apply it within our unique garden center environment.

 

What You'll Do:

  • Lead and support retail department managers and team members
  • Drive exceptional customer service and sales performance
  • Oversee daily retail operations across indoor and outdoor sales areas
  • Coordinate merchandising, inventory, and product presentation efforts
  • Support staffing, scheduling, hiring, onboarding, and employee development
  • Lead employee engagement, recognition, and culture-building initiatives
  • Chair the company's Culture Committee and help foster a positive workplace experience
  • Collaborate with ownership and other departments to improve operational performance and customer satisfaction
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, processes, and team effectiveness
  • Maintain a visible presence on the sales floor and actively support customers and employees

What We're Looking For:

  • 3+ years of retail management experience with responsibility for sales, operations, staffing, and customer service
  • Experience leading retail teams and coordinating the work of supervisors, department leaders, or multiple functional areas
  • Strong leadership, coaching, and employee development skills
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving abilities
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Experience with merchandising, inventory management, purchasing, or vendor relations preferred
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, customer-focused environment
  • Willingness to work both indoors and outdoors in a seasonal retail setting

Workshop Instructor

Job Summary:

Baker's workshops bring people together to learn, create, and enjoy hands-on projects in a fun and welcoming environment. We're looking for enthusiastic Workshop Instructors to help lead these experiences throughout the fall and winter seasons.

This is a unique opportunity for someone who enjoys working with people, feels comfortable speaking to groups, and would love a flexible, part-time role with a limited time commitment.

Whether you're a plant enthusiast, a creative hobbyist, a former teacher, a natural host, or simply someone who enjoys helping others learn, we'd love to hear from you.

 

What You'll Do:

  • Lead customers through hands-on workshop projects using provided materials and instructions
  • Create a positive, engaging, and welcoming experience for participants
  • Assist customers throughout the workshop and answer questions
  • Prepare materials and workstations before events
  • Help clean up and reset spaces following workshops
  • Share feedback and observations with the Marketing Manager

What We're Looking For:

  • Comfortable speaking in front of small and medium-sized groups

  • Able to follow provided workshop plans and instructions
  • Comfortable leading groups through hands-on activities

  • We’d love plant experience, but we're equally excited to meet candidates with strong people skills and a passion for helping others learn.

Schedule

  • Seasonal position running primarily from September through March
  • Most workshops require approximately two hours, including setup and cleanup
  • Workshop opportunities are offered based on seasonal programming and customer demand
  • Scheduling flexibility and availability for evening and weekend workshops is needed.

What to Expect

This is an active, hands-on role that combines customer interaction, creativity, and light physical work. Workshop Instructors spend time preparing materials, leading participants through projects, and helping clean up afterward.

You'll work with plants, soil, containers, and seasonal materials in a garden center environment. The role includes setting up workshop spaces, moving materials and supplies, and occasionally lifting up to 50 pounds. Depending on the season, you may work in both indoor retail and greenhouse spaces with varying temperatures.

Most workshop opportunities are scheduled during evenings and weekends when customers are available to attend.

Outdoor Sales Associate

Job Summary:
The Outdoor Greenhouse Sales Associate at Baker Garden & Gift will assist customers in purchasing merchandise while working with and caring for plant material. This role combines plant expertise and customer service to provide shoppers with an exceptional greenhouse experience! The Associate informs customers about proper care of plants, recommends products based on the consumer’s needs and preferences, and ensures merchandise is handled appropriately within the greenhouse.

 

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Greeting and interacting with customers.
  • Consults with customers to understand their needs and preferences related to merchandise.
  • Watering, pruning, and general care of plant material.
  • Actively sells plant material and garden center supplies.
  • Answers customer’s questions about merchandise.
  • Assists customers with purchase decisions.
  • Unloads shipments and restocks plant material.
  • Training on diagnostic questions and products.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Excellent verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent active listening skills.
  • Excellent sales and customer service skills.
  • Working knowledge of plants and/or gardening.
  • Ability to anticipate customers’ needs.
  • Ability to recommend merchandise to customers.
  • Ability to operate or to quickly learn the store’s point-of-sale system.


Education and Experience:

  • Previous retail experience preferred.
  • Plant knowledge and experience preferred.
  • On-the-job training provided.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and pulling.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at times.
  • Must be able to work in a variety of weather conditions.
