From humble roots as a road-side stand in 1957, Baker Garden & Gift has grown to include full nursery, garden center, landscape services, production farm, and gift store. With over 60 years of operation, Baker Garden & Gift is a staple for all things plants in the Fargo-Moorhead area.  

Our History

 

 

 

1957

Harry Baker started off his plant shop in a temporary garage stand at the intersection of University Dr and 18th Ave. Plants stayed fresh with a unique watering system--a hose running from a neighborhood home. 

 

 

 

1959

The nursery found its home for year-round sales at its current location on University Drive South. Harry’s wife noted how far out of town the nursery was!

 

 

 

1960

Baker Nursery business incorporated. 

 

 

 

1993

19 acres purchased for greenhouse production farm with 35,000 square feet of greenhouses. This is where the majority of the nursery's bedding plants are grown.

 

 

 

1995

Landscaping division established. Baker Landscaping contributes 20% off the nursery’s total profit. The landscaping team offers full scale services from design, installation and maintenance. 

 

 

 

2004

Rebrand to Baker Garden & Gift with gift store addition.

 

 

 

2020

Celebrating 60 years of operation. Baker Garden & Gift continues to offer excellent customer services adding interior plant maintenance, plant container design, monthly workshops and more!

Generations of Baker

Harry Baker

First Generation

Harry Baker spent the majority of his working years as a cemetery caretaker. After a few requests from families to add plants to gravestone markers his interest in horticulture sprouted. As an outlet for his growing interest, he started a side businesses selling plants from a temporary garage at University Drive and 19th Avenue South in 1957. After two years, Baker established the year-round nursery at its current site. 

Ken Baker

Second Generation

The family business continued as Harry's son, Ken Baker, joined the nursery in 1967. Studying horticulture at North Dakota State University, he was ready to further grow the business expanding the landscaping services and garden center offerings. The upward trend of sales was carefully tracked by Ken in his green journal. 

Eric Baker

Third Generation

In 1992 the third generation steps in. Eric, with a horticulture degree from the University of Minnesota was excited to grow the family business with technological advances in 1992. He established computerized databases for plant material and continues to search for innovations to longtime business.
